Despite being marketed as a natural wellness product, 7-hydroxymitragynine is a highly potent psychoactive compound capable of producing opioid-like effects.

Many consumers mistakenly believe these products are safe because they are available for legal purchase. However, medical professionals, toxicologists, poison centers, and law enforcement agencies across Missouri as well as the rest of the country are raising concerns about their potential for addiction, overdose, impaired judgment, and other serious health risks.

What Is 7-Hydroxymitragynine or 7-OH?

The gas station drug 7-Hydroxymitragynine commonly referred to as 7-OH is a naturally occurring alkaloid found in very small amounts within the Kratom plant. However, many commercially available products contain highly concentrated or enhanced levels of 7-Hydroxymitragynine that are significantly stronger than what naturally occurs in typical kratom.

Manufacturers of 7-OH often produce purified or concentrated versions designed specifically to increase potency. These products may be sold as tablets, capsules, powder, liquid shots, dissolvable strips, gummies, and other chewable products

Many 7-OH products promote relaxation, energy, pain relief, mood enhancement, or stress reduction.

How Does 7-OH Affect the Body?

7-Hydroxymitragynine interacts with opioid receptors in the brain, producing effects that may include pain relief, a feeling of euphoria, relaxation, drowsiness, and mood swings. At higher doses, 7-OH users run the risk of negative side effects like respiratory depression, impaired coordination, confusion, slowed reaction time, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, and a loss of consciousness

Because of its opioid-like effect on the brain, repeated use may increase the risk of physical dependence and addiction.

Is 7-OH Stronger Than Kratom?

The answer is yes, while kratom naturally contains dozens of alkaloids, 7-hydroxymitragynine exists only in trace amounts within the plant. Many commercial products contain concentrated levels that may be many times stronger than naturally occurring kratom, dramatically increasing the likelihood of adverse effects.

This distinction is important because consumers may incorrectly assume these products are equivalent to traditional kratom.
